All students entering UM-Helena must have placement test scores on file or submit official college transcripts, to determine placement in general education courses. ACT/SAT/MUS Writing Assessment scores are accepted in place of COMPASS Scores. Scores must be no more than three years old and must be on file before you can register for math or English classes.
If a student does not have any placement scores then a COMPASS test can be scheduled at UM-Helena. The COMPASS test, a basic skills assessment covering the areas of reading comprehension, English composition and math, can be taken at UM-Helena for a $15 fee($10 for English, $5 for Math).
Along with your placement scores, a writing sample may be required to assist in your placement in to the appropriate English course. Students who will transfer college level math and/or English courses must submit official college transcripts. Upon evaluation of their transfer credits these students may be exempted from submitting placement scores and completing a writing sample.
If you have questions about placement requirements, or if you would like to schedule an appointment for your COMPASS assessment, please contact the ACCESS Center at (406) 444-2766.
