Programs For High School Students

Application Process

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25 FOR Fall 2010 Semester

Compass test is required for math and writing placement if student does not have ACT, SAT, MUSW or previous course work that meets the requirements for placement.

Degree Seeking Student

UM-Helena maintains an open admissions policy. Any applicant who graduates from an accredited high school or who holds a GED certificate may be admitted. Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis, until all available positions in a specific program are filled. Some of our programs only allow entry in the fall, while others accept students for both fall and spring semesters.

  • A complete application includes the following components: Completed application, mailed or delivered to the Front Office
  • $30 application fee (non-refundable)
  • Proof of two MMR immunizations (if born after Dec. 31, 1956; proof of age if born before Jan. 1, 1957)
  • Official high school transcripts from an accredited high school, with graduation date posted, or a GED transcript. Home-schooled or non-accredited high school graduates may meet Ability to Benefit (see FAQ)
  • Official college transcripts, if applicable.
  • COMPASS Assessment scores

Applications can be obtained by calling Admissions and New Student Services at 406-444-6826. The Compass Assessment is a test to assist with placement into college level coursework. You will need to take the complete Compass test, including math and English (which includes writing and reading components), if you plan to enter any program at UM-Helena and do not have transfer credits in these areas.

The test helps college advisors place you into an appropriate math, English, and possibly reading course. The intent is to place you into courses that will challenge, but not frustrate you. These computerized tests are taken in the Learning Center and are NOT timed.

The cost of the complete test is $15 ($10 for English, $5 for Math), payable to UM-Helena COT in the Cashier’s office.

Call 444-6826 or 444-2766 to schedule the test.

Non-Degree Student

Students that are not seeking a degree, do not seek financial aid, who will enroll in less than 7 credits in a semester need to submit an non-degree application at the admission office at the time of registration along with a $30 one-time non-refundable application fee. If a course you are interested in has pre-requisites please contact the admissions office before submitting your application. An unofficial transcript is acceptable for non-degree seeking students choosing a class with pre-requisites requirements.

Non-degree registration process: COMPLETE Application ($30 application fee, pre-requisite coursework information and completed application) is received by Admissions
  • Student information processed by admissions
  • Student receives registration information and directions for registering for classes
  • Student receives schedule bill from UM-Helena Business Office
  • Student finalizes payment

Admission to the college does not guarantee entry to any specific program. Some programs have separate admission requirements while others are limited by seating capacity in required entry level courses and labs. In the event that capacity is reached in the required entry level course(s) for an applicant’s intended program of study, those applicants who have yet to register for their classes will be notified. In the event that space later becomes available, remaining applicants will be contacted based upon the date of completion of their application for admission.
